piKey clarifications [updated]

ImageA few clarifications about piKey:

  • Right now, an IR keyboard is probably your best option.  USB keyboard support will likely never be possible.

  • The list of supported IR keyboards is limited by Monsti's IR library (which is used by piKey).  Although in theory it could support everything listed in the pspirkeyb.ini file, in reality only the following keyboards have so far been tested fully so far:
  • Nova ETS - works fine, but may have problems with keyrelease events.
  • Targus Universal Wireless (I think this one is the best option so far - a nicely repositionable IR transmitter, and a properly implemented IR protocol.  See original piKey article for links to it on Amazon).
  • These ones are known not to work properly yet:
  • Belkin IR - needs an updated keymap.
  • Palm Universal Wireless - has issues with the current keymap.
  • IRWave IR620K PS/2 to IR adapter - needs a new keymap.
  • No directly-connected serial keyboard is yet supported, the serial connection is for terminal-style connections at the moment.  It is probably doable if we have access to serial keyboard hardware.

  • Supporting new keyboard hardware is expensive and time-consuming.  If you want support for a keyboard that is not yet fully supported, you may need to either write the driver for it yourself (or fix up the version in libpspirkeyb, if present), or donate funds so that we can buy the hardware and do it for you.

  • It's definitely not finished yet, but should work well enough for you if you have one of the supported keyboards.

UPDATE : It seems that the installer option to flash the pikey.prx to flash0 does not work, and may have been causing some of the problems that people have been seeing.

To fix this: remove all mention of pikey.prx from ms0:/seplugins/*.txt, then rerun the installer - this time, don't select to copy to flash0.

Apologies for any inconvenience - we thought we'd tested this configuration, but apparently hadn't.

I suspected the palm universal wasn't compatible. it does suck though, because the app that brought ir keyboards to the psp, tydopad ONLY supported this keyboard, that's why i bought this, as did pspvi. guess i'm gonna have to sell this thing somehow, probably at a little bit of a loss, though it looks like the targus keyboard is more full-featured anyway. i've already spent much money on my psp, so this isn't such a big problem

Thanx for the update, fanjita & noobz team smilies/smiley.gif

For the Palm universal wireless keyboard, would simply changing the qwerty-include.ini make it work properly?

About the Palm UW: I don't have one myself, so it's hard to do a lot of work with it. But if TyDoPad fully supports it, then it's probably not too difficult to take the keymap from there. Life's very busy right now, perhaps at the weekend I might have a moment to take a look.

i've got the targus one on order, but it's the U version, should work though, i suspect. i scored it for $20 smilies/tongue.gif. as for the keymap, psp vi includes a keymap file, although even in that program the palm doesn't want to really work (although it claims it was made for it). tydopad supports it beautifully, yet i see no external keymap files or anything.

For all those having trouble outside of the test app:

I understand that the palm keyboard has problems when pikey is running as a VSH plugin, but I don't have a palm keyboard to find out why. If anyone can lend a palm keyboard for a few days, please let me know. I'll also be looking into Tyranos' stuff over the next couple of days to see if that helps.

For the Targus, I can guarantee that it works fine in 310OE when installed and configured properly. I haven't tested on 303OE though - are you all using 303? More likely to be the problem - are you sure that you've enabled the piKey plugin in the recovery mode?

Why even make a IR keyboard support, the whole idea of the PSP is that its small, now all of a sudden ppl wanna attach a f*cking keyboard to em, what next IR printer support, ppl its not hard to type using the in built virtual number keyboard and its not like you wanna type a f*cking novel on your psp is it.
I won't be using it!
March 26, 2007

Fanjita said:

The Gunslinger: That's your choice. But the point is that you can get IR keyboards that fold up to the same size as the PSP - for the sake of IM on the move, or being able to type full-length URLs without getting frustrated, keyboard support is very useful. The proliferation of homebrew OSKs is evidence that people want to be able to enter text into their PSPs more conveniently than with the built-in OSK. Now they can.

Kandibu: You need to wait for the Danzeff plugin for piKey, or for AFKIM to support piKey natively - both are coming soon.

Koo: try the suggestion above of not flashing the pikey.prx to flash.

Tyranos: Your changes have been submitted to Monsti, they should appear in an updated version of piKey very soon.

The Gunslinger said:

yeah i see your point now Fanjita, and i suppose it would be ideal with a foldaway keyboard (see http://www.urban75.org/tech/stowaway-keyboard-review.html) seen this one and thinking of buying it if it works, it'd look quiet nifty with my psp sat on that little ledge.

hmm i some problems. I'em from germany and if i type in P, it will show me a "??". When i chose language "english", there won't be that problem. I think that 's because every language has his own OSK-Layout. Sometimes there are more signs. I hope you can fix that for german smilies/smiley.gif

There is also another problem.
If you want to type something in google, there is another Layout than typing a URL in... Maybe you should add a "selekt" button to the OSK-Plugin, so you can easily switch between the layouts. Thx for attention ^^

One thing I noticed with pikey and the OSK is when you open the OSK, pikey auto-presses the select button once and changes the default keyboard to the multilingual/spanish one. When this happens, punctuation often doesn't match the key used to type it. If you press "?" you get an upside-down "!". Can we have it so pikey does not auto press the select button in the OSK?

  I have a problem here.

When the plugin is enabled in both GAME and VSH, it works fine in VSH. But when i try to start any 1.50 kernel homebrew (e.g. the pikey sample) in the GAME, the PSP shuts down after the gameboot screen. 3.XX kernel homebrew works fine though.

I have reinstalled 3.03 OE-C, installed pikey according to the updated method, GAME folder set to 1.50 kernel and i have the targus universal wireless keyboard PA870 V2. Disabling it in VSH, is was able to run 1.50 homebrew and the pikey sample worked fine with my keyboard.

So the bottom line is, I can only have the plugin enabled in either VSH or GAME but not both.

I'm having some sort of reverse problem with my IR Keyboard is a Targus Universal Wireless Keyboard (Model PA870v2.0) on firmware 3.52 M33-4... Pikey works only in VSH Mode, in the regular xmb and psp games, but won't work in IRShell 3.6 (and most homebrews) in GAME Mode...

When I enable them both, only the VSH mode really works but in both VSH mode and GAME mode, I get the message "PiKey is Enabled".

In IRShell, the only working key is the "Apps-Date-Inbox-Note" key (the one that usually displays the help box in VSH). When pressed, the box stays there, and the top row of icons of the PSP garbages a bit (not the icon, only the selection of the icon). Nothing else happens.

In the recovery menu, I only enable one or the other, so at least it works in the XMB, but I hate typing in the browser... so many clicking noise... and it takes a while to see what the f--k you're actually writing... Like writing in the matrix or something.
