PSP Slim USB Charger Plugin

Those of you that have tried out Sony's version of the USB charge feature are probably a litle bit dissapointed that you are unable to charge the PSP whenever the PSP is plugged in. Well now you dont need to be as we have developed a plugin which allows the PSP to charge whenever the PSP Slim is connected using USB.

  Does this definitely work okay?

I know I have problems charging a PSP classic using a USB to PSP cable as 500mA isn't enough to power the PSP AND charge the battery at the same time. It ends up flipping between charging and not charging all the time as the PSP power usage varies. I only dare use that cable when the PSP is not in use for fear that constant flipping will wear out the battery or even break the charging circuit somehow. I will probably convert it to use 2 USB ports to get the full 1A to solve the problem.

I'm curious though, how does the slim PSP solve this problem as surely it only uses 1 USB port for charging? Does it just naturally draw so much less power that its not an issue anymore? One would think if it DID then Sony would have been happy to allow it to charge ALL the time USB is plugged in. The only logical reason not to do that is if it still suffers the above problem.

I have a Fat PSP and charge by USB port even when using it, even using the USB port accessing the ms from the Mac/PC, so Slim PSP should have no issues doing the same, just a Sony issue not a PSP issue.

They just like to enable stuff on updated firmware to make it look good I bet.
CFW still years ahead than offical firmware.

Sonii's usbcharge function was one of the things that dissapointed about the slim.
So thanks for fixing this for us. The scene doing Sonii's job again.

Suggestion for "next release" if...:
It would be great if it had an on/off function, hotkeys perhaps, or if it could work with the xmb usb charge on/off.
Will it not cause extra strain too the battery if it gets small charges every now and then, when its plugged in?

Well all I can say is my FAT PSP DEFINATELY has charging issues over USB using only a single USB port because it draws too much of the power when playing games. You can see the light go green whenever it uses a lot of power then back to orange. Often it flickers between the two as the power usage is varying. If I leave it turned off or use the official charger, its fine.

This is a great release. This is why Noobz is so great. Really making some cool contributions to the PSP homeberw scene. I don't know what SONY was thinking by having the PSP Slim & Lite only charge when it is inoperable in "USB Connection" status. Thanks for keeping the future of the PSP homebrew scene alive with releases for the Slim & Lite.

"I don't know what SONY was thinking by having the PSP Slim & Lite only charge when it is inoperable in "USB Connection" status."

Probably what I explained above. I do not believe it charges properly while powered on because most of the 500mA is used for powering the PSP leaving very little to none left over to charge the battery.
September 30, 2007

Chris Swindle said:

Alex Atkin: The PSP Slim by default only charges when in USB mode, hence it will only charge the PSP when it is using the USB bus. As the PSP does not run directly on the USB power it always feeds the battery which then feeds the PSP even if it is a low current it will still help extend the battery power. So as they designed the Slim to charge like I do not think you need to worry and I certainly do not find that it bounces between charge and not charging with either PC or USB mains adapted.

I suppose this is the right place to give feedback about this plugin so I hope the author(s) of it read(s) these comments smilies/smiley.gif

I noticed a few things:

1) When the plugin is enabled and the PSP Slim is usb-plugged, in the "System settings / Battery information" screen it still says:
Hours left: flickers uselessly between 0:00 and any an approximate time left if there was no usb-charging going on
Power Source: Battery
Battery Status: In use

Shouldn't it be displaying:
Hours left: -
Power Source: External
Battery Status: Charging

2) When the PSP is charging through USB using this plug-in, shouldn't it inhibit the firmware's feature automatically powering off the PSP after the lap of time defined in the Power Saving Settings?. Currently, even when charging up, my PSP (e.g with 5min idle-before-shutting-down set) shuts down at the set idle time, cutting off the USB-charging (the orange power LED switches off completely).

3) Following 2), if the PSP was charging through USB using the plug-in, then auto-switched off, and I switch the PSP back on again (USB is still plugged in), the battery indicator on the screen doesn't start flickering again. I don't know if this is a gfx bug, or if the plug-in didn't enable usb-charging again. I am not sure how the plug-in works, but maybe it should now and then check again if the usb cable is plugged in or not (or at least when the plug-in prx was just loaded), instead of just hooking the and events.

Hope my feedback is not too much noobish. Thx for the wonderful work you all do smilies/smiley.gif

Thx for the wonderful work !

Sashimi: Here are the responses (and yes I am reading smilies/wink.gif). The main reason that the graphical glitches and stuff like that are due to the fact that Sony did not code the VSH to handle the charging of the PSP via the USB as it does not officially support it. The main thing that you should base the charging status on is the charging LED, once it is fully charged it will turn back to green.
September 30, 2007

Sashimi said:

Swindle > I am honored to get a answer from the Mr. Author himself smilies/grin.gif
Just to say in my 3) I forgot to mention that when powering on after a auto-power-saving powering-off, the LED does not turn orange but rather just simply green. Basically, I think that powering on after an auto-power-off has occured doesn't activate auto usb-charging via the plug-in again. Could someone else try this out please ?

Thx again for the work.

Thanks for this great plugin, finally the USB charging works as expected. When I first tried my Slim, I was wondering if it was broken because USB charging didn't work. I had to read the manual to discover the peculiar way Sony coded it.

However, there's one drawback. As ICEy already mentioned and as I discovered today, the Gocam doesn't work when the VSH plugin is enabled. I didn't test the GAME plugin, but I guess it doesn't mess up the cam, unless you're using the GoEdit soft.

ICEy: yes, I was about to make a notice about this issue smilies/smiley.gif Sometimes, the "camera" feature in the XMB freezes the whole psp while loading. The USB-charging did not have any issues though, seemed to work just fine.

Seems to me the only type of mini-USB charger you have to worry about damaging the system is the type that plug directly into the wall, like the charger for the Razr phones. I tried it once, and the menus ran at super-speed, and the disc started spinning like it was trying to go back in time. Regular USB cables to a PC should work just fine.

With the new firmware the USB charge works great. Even if it doesn't say its charging it is. I also tested it by playing Tekken online with a friend while the USB was plugged in (and the plugin was enabled). We played for 3 hours, I had already used the PSP for about 4 hours before, then I had a 2 hour trip back home and played Tekken and listened to some tunes. By the time I got home, one of the battery bars was gone.

Before this pluging we played tekken online for about 2-3 hours and it would completely drain my battery. So this is totally awesome. And if you go to battery information and leave it there for a few minutes, you'll see that the charge (and the time left) increases.
