Pandora's Battery
Written by Fanjita    Wednesday, 22 August 2007

Image We told you that we'd be releasing an unbricker for the M33 bricks.  But then we got to thinking, maybe that just wouldn't be exciting enough.

Would you like a super special surprise bonus?  How about an unbricker for ALL PSPs?  Yep, you read that right.  We call it "Pandora's Battery".

There's a larger story behind this unbricker, though, and it deserves to be told.  It's the culmination of years of behind-the-scenes research and development by some of the top names in PSP hacking, under the name of the Prometheus project.  This group of people, from various development teams, was dedicated to developing and releasing PSP hacks and exploits, with the aim of improving the status of PSP homebrew, and making sure that it was kept alive.

For some time this project was highly successful - many releases from Noobz, C+D and others were direct results of this work.  The zenith of this success was the development of this unbricker - which required some amazing technical leaps, including:

  1. Reverse engineering of the service (unbrick) mode
  2. Development of a technique to change an ordinary battery into a service mode trigger battery (and back)
  3. Development of custom IPL code along with a technique to sign that code as authentic.
Even more impressive is that all of the above was achieved without any access to the official hardware or software.  With careful nurturing, this unbricker and custom IPL was to become the foundation of a whole new homebrew environment.

Unfortunately something happened to shatter the idyll.  Somehow, the unbricker was leaked into the wider world before it was ready to be released.  Whether this was deliberate, by one of the team members, or accidental via a security breach is still unclear.  The fact is that this unbricker appeared on the black market, being sold for huge prices.  As far as we know, it is probably very close to the same software that appears in at least some of the 'magic unbricker'/'jigkick' videos.

So, although the time was not right to release this (it would have been wise to wait at least until the PSP Slim release), our hand has been forced.  In order to prevent small fortunes being made by leeches, we are giving this unbricker away for free.  So - let it be known - if you have paid for an unbricker, then you have been ripped off.  I suggest that you take up your grievances with the seller - it should never have been sold.   And if you're unhappy about this being released before PSP Slim - then blame whoever it was that leaked or stole it.

It's unclear whether or not this is the end for the Prometheus project -  hopefully not, but that is undecided so far.  In case it is the end, it is worth a quick roll of honour. In alphabetical order:

Adrahil, Booster, Cswindle, Dark_AleX, Ditlew, Fanjita, Joek2100, Jim, Mathieulh, Nem, Psp250, Skylark, TyRaNiD.

And here are their respective C+D (Create and Destroy) nicknames.

Mathieulh = WiseFellow
Tyranid = bockscar
Fanjita = FullerMonty
Joek = CosmicOverSoul
Dark_Alex = Malyot
Chris = Caretaker
Adrahil = VoidPointer
nem = h1ckeyph0rce

Anyway - make sure to read the readme.txt in this release for how to use it, but in brief it works like this:

  1. You run a program on a homebrew-enabled PSP that will convert a standard PSP battery into a jigkick battery.  Note that you can't then use that battery normally - so you should use a spare one.
  2. You run a program to generate the unbricker memory stick image, built from the v1.5 update EBOOT (note that this, and the custom IPL, means the release is completely free of Sony copyright materials).
  3. You run some programs on a PC to install the image to your memory stick.

Now, you have a battery/memory stick pair that works just like the famous jigkick combination (but better) - just insert them into any PSP (even a brick) and the PSP will be reinstalled with the v1.5 firmware.  As far as we know, this will continue to work for all future firmwares.

Enjoy!  And remember - if you find this useful, please donate to the original developers - it's a lot cheaper than paying £1500 for it on the black market...  Donations via paypal please using this button:

(Webmasters reporting this news on other sites : please include this alternative donation link. Please also preserve our Digg, rather than starting your own).

UPDATE : Oh, and thanks for the scum that decided to 'bury' our Digg story, in favour of their own.  That's scummery of the lowest type.

  this is an absolutely awesome release! not only a debricker, but a way to downgrade 3.51 or 3.52 also! you met the needs of everyone with this!

of corse to debrick or downgrade 3.51/3.52 you need a psp with custom or 1.50 on it, but there's places to find that.

my only question is why not make the firmware installed to the mem card a full costom firmware or a full 1.50 firmware. it would have opened more options for restoring the battery, downgrading, debricking, or installing custom firmware to the psp without having to even downgrade first. (or just running your firmware off the card removing the need to restore the battery.)

i'd imagine you all tried to make it so it could do this, i'm just curiouse what would have stopped you.

  Ziped memmory stick pro duo unbricker for people with bricked psp.
Would that not be a good idea?
If someone has already made a memmory card with all the pandoras files for unbricking. Then why not just make a zip file that can be dumped to a memmory stick, wich can be used by any psp owner that has no way of making the files themselves ie already bricked or just wanting to downgrade. This way all you would need is the pandoras unbricker battery to unbrick with.
Can someone try this please.
It would be very cool if that would work.
Everyone would just need the unbrick battery and they could download the zip and just use a memmory card reader to transfer files from the zip to memmory card.

Everyone else with a CF or 1.5 psp could then just use the pandora battery software to make a battery and have no need for the rest of the tutorial.

Just a thought!

You are all amazing at what you do, and I only wish that you could get alot more in return rather than the s**t that alot of people in the scene give you.

  INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

1. Using the USB connection, connect the PSP with the memory card inserted.
2. Format the memory stick. You can use either Windows Explorer to format the disk, or use the PSP "Format Memory Stick"

option
3. Extract the contents of the pandora.zip file to c:\pandora
4. Open a DOS prompt (Start -> Run -> CMD -> )
5. type c: type cd c:\pandora\mspformat
6. type mspformat (in my case W) ???mspformat W???

You should see a prompt like this:

>>> C:psppandoramspformat>mspformat.exe W
>>> You are about to format the drive W.
>>> All data will be lost. Do you want to continue? [Y]

Type "Y".

>>> Y

and you should see

>>> Drive succesfully formatted, and partition moved.

7. Stop the USB connection, and unplug the memory stick (you can leave the cable connected). Seriously REMOVE THE STICK

FROM THE PSP
8. Plug the memory stick back in and reconnect to Windows
9. Manually make the directory on the memory stick for PSP\GAME and PSP\GAME150 (GAME150 for custom firmwares like OE)
10. Copy the two directories for each application into either the GAME or GAME150 directory (for me it was GAME150)
11. Download the official 1.50 FW update from http://www.psp-hacks.com/download.php?id=4
12. Extract the update and store it on the root of the MS, named UPDATE.PBP
13. Stop the USB connection and go to the application "Pandora???s Battery Firm. Installer" - this only takes a few moments.
14. ONCE COMPLETED DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP - REMOVE THE MS FROM THE PSP AND POWER THE UNIT DOWN RE-INSERT THE MS AND POWER

THE SYSTEM BACK ON
15. Once completed, start the USB connection to the Windows PC.
16. Copy the file msipl.bin from the MS to c:\pandora\msinst
17. from a DOS prompt (referenced above) do the following
18. type cd c:\pandora\msinst
19. type ???msinst W msipl.bin

You should see a prompt like this. I guarantee that your stuff will be slightly different; it depends on how your computer is

set up, what sort of memory stick you have, and so on. As long as you get the "Are You Sure? [Y]" prompt, you know that the

msipl.bin file is OK.

>>> C:psppandoramsinst>msinst W msipl.bin
>>> PSP MS IPL Installer
>>> Load IPL code msipl.bin
>>> 241664 bytes(59 block) readed
>>>
>>> Target DRIVE is 7
>>> Check partation Sector
>>> boot status 0x80
>>> start head 0x05
>>> start sec/cyl 0x0004
>>> partation type 0x06
>>> last head 0x0F
>>> last sec/cyl 0xB7E0
>>> abs sector 0x00000810
>>> ttl sector 0x000767F0
>>> signature 0xAA55
>>> Check BPB Sector
>>> signature AA55
>>> Check free reserved sector:OK
>>> Write ABS Sector 0x10 to 0x1E7
>>> Are You Sure ?[Y]

Type "Y".

>>> Y

and you should see

>>> Write MS BOOT CODE

21. Now, browse over to the MS under games, and run the application "Pandora's Battery Creator" I recommend backing up the

eeprom of the battery just in case (it???s 1K , you???ve got plenty of space). The steps should be pretty obvious at this point,

if you decide to backup the eeprom, you'll have to re-enter the battery program to update the battery firmware.
22. ONCE COMPLETED DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP - REMOVE THE MS FROM THE PSP AND POWER THE UNIT DOWN RE-INSERT THE MS AND ALSO

REMOVE AND RE-INSERT THE (NOW MODDED) BATTERY. POWER THE SYSTEM BACK ON
23.
24. Congratulation, you are now in posession of a "Magic Memory Stick"
25. and a "JigKick Battery".

You're all set!

To unbrick a bricked PSP (this part's a lot easier, I promise):

1. With a working PSP or memory stick reader, copy the firmware 1.50 update file into the root of the "magic" memory stick,

namd UPDATE.PBP, just like in step 15 above.
2. Insert the "magic" memory stick.
3. Insert the unbricker battery. Your wifi, memory stick, and power lights should all turn on temporarily, and a menu should

appear.
4. Press X. After it checks the update file, you should get another menu.
5. Press X to write Firmware 1.50 onto the PSP.

Much credit goes to "Freeplay" and "HarryK" for there guides witch iput togther to make this more in-depth

Torch said:

  the psp is programmed in hardware to check the serial no. of the battery as soon as its inserted. If the serial number is 0xFFFFFF then it loads the IPL from the memory stick instead of flash0. Hence a bricked flash0 doesnt matter.

This also happens when you put it in sleep mode and back. Which means, suppose you start the psp with the AC adapter, and then insert the pandora battery and memstick, and put it in sleep, and unsleep it, it will load the memstick!

So basically if you wanna use a pandora battery normally, you must boot it with only the ac adapter and then insert the battery, then u must never turn it off or sleep it.

  Err...doesn't this basically mean I can use my non-brick PSP and downgrade it to 1.5 from any firmware too? If I understood Torch's expalanation correctly, the battery should be restoreable to a normal battery (if there is a way to figure the serialnumber...but shouldn't that stand on the battery anyway?)

Would be a really great way to downgrade without any games...and a new battery is probably easier to buy than lumines nowdays smilies/cool.gif

Im curious as to how sony will respond to this. Exploits are generally fixed via firmware updates, but something like this seems like it might require something more than that.

@ Paul:
Yeah, it will downgrade any firmware. Going by what Torch said (great description btw), if the serial of the battery is 0xFFFFFF it doesnt even look at the flash0 on the psp and goes straight to the mem stick, so the battery doesnt know what firmware is in the psp's flash0.

I hope you'll keep your paypal account for a long time, you'll probably still receive donations in several years when people brick and magically unbrick smilies/wink.gif

Can't wait to try it on a psp slim, though...
It might be wise to buy the PSP slim when it is first released, as it probably won't have any protection agains that...

  i don't know if this will be of any help. . .
for those who are getting "error reading system.dreg" message and are on OE/SE/M33 fw, try to downgrade to 1.5 OFW. . .you can use the recovery menu for that. . .then create the pandora's battery using that firmware. it worked for me. . .again, this only works for those who are on OE/SE/M33. i'm very sure that there could another way to solving this without the need to downgrade your existing CFW. . .

i salute team C D and all the devs behind it for this very remarkable milestone in psp history. . .guys like you make me love my psp so much! smilies/grin.gif

, comment me if ya know what i mean,
unless the only way to revert back to normal, is to complete a downgrade and then run the program while the battery is in use under 1.50

Help!is there something wrong in what i've done.
i'm already in the "System Back On Procedure".

You should see a prompt like this. I guarantee that your stuff will be slightly different; it depends on how your computer is

set up, what sort of memory stick you have, and so on. As long as you get the "Are You Sure? [Y]" prompt, you know that the

msipl.bin file is OK.

>>> C:psppandoramsinst>msinst W msipl.bin
>>> PSP MS IPL Installer
>>> Load IPL code msipl.bin
>>> 241664 bytes(59 block) readed
>>>
>>> Target DRIVE is 7
>>> Check partation Sector
>>> boot status 0x80
>>> start head 0x05
>>> start sec/cyl 0x0004
>>> partation type 0x06
>>> last head 0x0F
>>> last sec/cyl 0xB7E0
>>> abs sector 0x00000810
>>> ttl sector 0x000767F0
>>> signature 0xAA55
>>> Check BPB Sector
>>> signature AA55
>>> Check free reserved sector:OK
>>> Write ABS Sector 0x10 to 0x1E7
>>> Are You Sure ?[Y]

this is what happens after i did this:
THE SYSTEM BACK ON
15. Once completed, start the USB connection to the Windows PC.
16. Copy the file msipl.bin from the MS to c:\pandora\msinst
17. from a DOS prompt (referenced above) do the following
18. type cd c:\pandora\msinst
19. type ???msinst W msipl.bin

This what appears:

C:\pandora\msinst>msinst F msipl.bin
PSP MS IPL Installer
Load IPL code msipl.bin
241664 bytes(59 block) readed

Target DRIVE is 1
Check partation Sector
boot status 0x80
start head 0x01
start sec/cyl 0x0001
partation type 0x0E
last head 0x7F
last sec/cyl 0xE460
abs sector 0x00000020
ttl sector 0x001E4FE0
signature 0xAA55
Check BPB Sector
signature AA55
Check free reserved sector:to small reserved sectors

  I have one question, a friend of mine is going to unbrick my psp, but we are afraid that creating the jigkick battery will brick my friend's psp, does it have risk to brick, creating a pandora battery? Please anwser me smilies/cry.gif

  jeff6780: You will need a hacked PSP to create the memory stick. If Datel didn't tell you that, then I suggest you get in touch with them and express your dissatisfaction.

Iron Sting: There is no risk.

HUGE NOOB: Press the screen brightness button. Then upgrade to a custom firmware to fix the screen brightness problem.

  I understand that the Pandora's Battery allows you to run 1.5 from mem stick (with limitations). But is it possible to allow it to run other official firmware (encrypted or decrypted) from mem stick?

I currently have 3.40 OE-A and would like to have the ability to play games that require firmware like 3.5 without having to install a different CFW such as 3.52-M33.

  Hi, I understand you need Memory Stick Pro Duo, and at least 256 MB, but does it have to be Sony, or would a SanDisk do as well?

Yes, you can use sandisk ms.

  @Nightwarrior: In order to make the Pandora Battery you need a PSP with 1.5 or custom firmware. AFTER you have made the battery, then you can use it to downgrade.

@GENE: When you say that you have 3.40 oem, do you mean you have the official 3.40 from Sony? If so, read what I wrote to Nightwarrior.
