WiFi MAC Address Fixer
Written by Chris Swindle    Tuesday, 25 September 2007

ImageThis is a little utility to help all of those who are too lazy to manually change their MAC address back to the correct value. This can be of use for people that have changed Wifi boards in the PSP, or if they have changed the MAC address manually.

Hopefully this will make life easier for others.

Useful for those ones who cannot see their REAL PSP MAC Adresses with a WiFi Link Wireless Lan Utility. I am going to test it soon, but for the time being, PSP MAC Adress Changer V2 from G54Macid is useful too.

I had written a custom MAC address to IDStorage (00:11:22:33:44:55. Heh) and ran this to see if it would change my MAC back to normal. Sadly, it just changed the key to 00:00:00:00:00:00. I already have my original address backed up, but I figured you guys might like to know.

could this fix the problem wifi problem on the slim 371m33?
September 26, 2007

cswindle said:

Brin: I would expect that is due to not being able to start wifi, did you have wifi enabled? If you didn't just enable the switch and do it again.

OdF: I am not aware of what problem you are talking about on 371 m33 as mine works fine.

Very nice. I changed my wifi board a couple weeks back because my headphone jack was messed up (obviously on the same board) and all went well. Browser worked and etc but I never bothered to game share until last night and realized that mac addresses do matter ahahh. Good stuff.
September 27, 2007

Brin said:

cswindle: Yep, tried it with every combination of kernels, WLAN switch on/off... Still no joy. It's only an issue because I switched my board a while back, and I can't remember which board my backup's for smilies/cheesy.gif

Nice nice work. Very little documentation out there on the side effects of swapping out the Wifi borad. This utility is great - I can now do game sharing as well. Kudos to the noobz team!!!
September 27, 2007

cswindle said:

Brin: What firmware are you running on your PSP, does the WLAN LED light up, are you able to use wifi to connect to an access point?

If you can connect to an access point, you can get the MAC address by testing the wlan connection via the PSP menu and at the bottom of the test report is the MAC address.

yeah i have the same problem as Brin
except i didnt change my mac address, i just decided to run it to see if pandora had done anything silly, now i have the interesting mac address of 00:00:00:00:00:00
and despite numerous efforts, any attempt to bring it back to the correct value will work, but adhoc still breaks.
its interesting.
September 28, 2007

Chris Swindle said:

discobil, brin: I presume you are running either on firmware 150, or have the custom firmware set to run applications in ms0:/PSP/GAME using 150 kernel. Try out the updated version of the macfixer that I have just uploaded and it will at least return an error message saying what was wrong.

PSP User said:

On m33 v3.71 GAME folder set to 3.71, the program runs and says MAC address is set correct. Then, nothing happens. I was using the original posted fixer yesterday and exited out using Home. Every time I tried to use WiFi I got an error which I think was 00000001 or something. Now that I use the updated fixer it works but still doesn't exit unless I use Home. Is this how it's supposed to work?
September 29, 2007

Chris Swindle said:

PSP User, that is telling you that it is set correct and hence will make no change. When you go to system settings does it show a MAC address if it does then any problem you are having is not due to having it wrong.
September 29, 2007

discobill said:

cheers your updated version worked for me.

this is like a spoofer, innit?
cause i changed my psp's mac to my computers mac (psp can't connect to router, pc can cause of router settings)
and the psp couldn't connect to the router.

so, how would i go deep in the psp and change the mac address?
October 28, 2007

Chris Swindle said:

vinny, not sure what app you used to try and change the mac to your computers mac address, but it was not this. Also if you have changed you mac using another application then you would still be able to connect to a router as you have not changed the real mac address of the wifi card, just what is displayed in the PSP XMB menu as changing the real mac is not possible (or at least not publicly known at the time of writting).

This application does not spoof, it just sets the mac that the XMB uses back to the real mac address of the wifi card. You should add the PSP to the router which is going to be a lot more sensible than trying to spoof a mac adddress of another machine.

please, I want to change my mac address slim psp...
October 28, 2007

Chris Swindle said:

venom, you can not currently change the mac address that is used in communication to the access point as that is controlled by the wifi controller. There is a possibility that it would be possible to change the value on the card via software, but I do not imagine that there are that many people that would bother with that, when the main reason would be to add to an access point, which you can just add to the list of mac's supported.

I am also having the same problem Ogami has. I did the same thing. My friends Slim was bricked, I used pandora's battery and a magic memory stick to flash it with M33 3.71 but it got stuck formatting flash1. I used my slim and dumped the nand then flashed his psp, after that m33 3.71 installed fine. Now the Wifi, UMD, and programs dont work. The UMD gives a "Disc could not be read" error and programs give the "The game cannot be started. The region code is not correct." I thought of trying to set the region in the recovery menu but that didnt fix my program problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jachra said:

  @H3xx

Did you dump your friends NAND too? If that is not the case, then you s*****d your friends PSP Slim.
You have installed your ID Storage on his PSP Slim. The ID Storage can not be fixed at this time without a nand-backup.
January 08, 2008

H3xx said:

Thanks Jachra. No, I didnt create a backup of his NAND, Guess I'm sending it back to sony then, that blows. There has to be a way to create a new Idstorage.prx. We just need to figure out how.
January 08, 2008

Jachra said:

  @H3xx

Well, the scene is checking that. It is not a prx-file. In the first section of the nand-chip is a "space" that is called ID Storage. The ID Storage is divided in some sections called keys. Some of these keys are encrypted. The UMD-key is one of them. When those encrypted keys are replaced with other data or is broken, then the reading of a UMD fails.

When you send the unit back to Sony then make it a full brick. Flash original firmware in it. While flashing take out the battery and power cable. Then the PSP is fully bricked and Sony has to repair it.
January 09, 2008

H3xx said:

What I'm planning on doing is creating a randomized dummy file that is 66MB and naming it Nand-dump.bin and then writing it. That should brick it, yep, it does. that is one pretty looking paperweight, lol.

I have found the problem and the fix!

Using IDStorage checker on Pandora Battery (Emerald edition) I checked the 0x44 and 0x45 keys.

As suspected the 0x44 was showing the old MAC address.

However, the 0x45 key was showing PSP1004 - this was odd as my PSP is 1003 . Then the penny dropped; I got the Wifi card from Hong Hong hence the Wifi Region showing as 1004.

Solution - Using Pandora (Emerald Edition)
===============================

Using IDStorage changer I changed the 1st hex entry on 0x45 from 02 to 01. The makes the WLAN region PSP100?

Now use KeyCleaner to clean the keys, it should clean the 0x45 key so will be the correct key for the region of you PSP (in my case PSP1003).

Remove Pandora and reboot as normal and use MACFixer again - it should now fix your MAC Address to correct one on the new card you have installed.

I hope this helps some people. smilies/grin.gif
